Hi everybody!
Just wanted to let you now how my trip went.
I got here early this morning after a truck ride from Kingston to Port hope from where a local guy gave me a lift to Bailieboro where I called Christine and she picked me up.
The train ride to Syracuse was really good and relaxed, Amtrak! Nathan, the guy I hooked up with through the couchsurfing community online, picked me up at the station in Syracuse together with his girlfriend Risa. Very nice and helpful people. I had a good night sleep, and in the morning Nate gave me a lift to a truckstop outside town. I had breakfast in Mcdonalds, and was offered a lift to watertown with a 76year old truckdriver, he had been driving trucks since the age of fourteen, and was still going strong.
In watertown I hung out at the truckstop for around 5hours, trying to get a ride with no success until the afternoon when an american guy working in Canada agreed upon taking me to the border. I walked across and had to wait in immigration for an hour or so. They asked me questions and checked my bags, but finally came to the conclusion it's safe to let me in, they even gave me a ride over the st.Lawrence river, and the customs officer offered to borrow me his cellphone so I can call the farm ahead.
By now sun was setting, and I was standing beside the road.Nothing for maybe half an hour, and then a car stops. I went to the window to ask them if they are going west, but they tell me to move in front of the car. It's the police, and they ask me if I;m from germany. I say Finland and show them my passport. Everything is ok, and they shake my hand and wish me welcome to Canada. then a truck stops, and I get a ride to Kingston. The driver answers my questions about Canada which I'm getting really interested in now, I feel welcome here. At the truckstop in KIngston i ask around for a ride west without success. Except for one guy who is leaving in the morning. So I decide to spend the night at the truckstop. There's a small shop and a drivers lounge with a couple of sofas, perfect. I sleep some on the sofas, every now and then I wake up when a fresh set of drivers come in, I listen to their stories and ask them about canada. around 4am I get up, go into the shop to have a coffee and a chat with the guy working, and then head out to the truck of the guy of yesterday. He's ready to go, I climb in, and we're off west.
So far so good, I had a good sleep in my new home (which is a large tent inside the barn. Big enough to stand in, complete with bed, couch and carpet :) )
